The Old Fashioned

This recipe for an old fashioned was created by Wise Guys in Newport, Ky.

What you will need:
          2 oz Old Forester
          3 Dashes Angostura Bitters
          1 Sugar Cube
          1 Orange Peel
          1 Cherry

How to make:
In a mixing glass, add the bitters and the sugar cube.
Use a muddler to break up the sugar cube and dissolve the sugar into the bitters.
Then add the bourbon into the mixing glass.
Torch an orange peel over the glass, do this by squeezing an orange peel over a
match or lighter into the glass.
Add ice and stir for just a few revolutions.
Strain into a glass with ice.
Garnish with orange peel and cherry.

New Riff Turns One

Yesterday was the anniversary of New Riff's first bourbon distillation and was put in the barrel three days later. Members of their Ranger program were able to visit the distillery on Father's Day for a tasting of that barrel and an open house. This bourbon was a very light color, it had a sweet taste but was not complex. It came out of the barrel at 108 proof. It was very smooth for just one year and did not have much burn. It was very similar to their "New Make" which is very smooth, compared to other white whiskeys it does not have quite as much bite. The Ranger program at New Riff is a very interesting program, essentially you buy your bottle four years ahead of time. Also you get deals on their merchandise and exclusive opportunities to purchase other products before the general public. I would recommend this program to anyone, even if you don't live in the area. You can learn more about it here or stop by their distillery located in Newport, KY.

The Creation of Bourbon and Bourbon By Day's First Post

According to legend and popular belief on this day (June 14) 1789, Reverend Elijah Craig invented bourbon. This occurred after a he stored his whiskey in barrels that had been in a fire. Today, Elijah Craig is made in three forms Elijah Craig Small Batch, Elijah Craig Single Barrel and Elijah Craig Barrel Proof. It is currently produced by Heaven Hill, which makes 19 different types of American Whiskey (13 Bourbons, 1 Wheat Whiskey, 2 Corn Whiskeys, 2 Ryes, and 1 New Make).
